“The quickest way for a parent to get a child’s attention is to sit down and look comfortable.” ~ Lane Olinghouse

Holy moly Ian is 5 months old now!  Where has the time gone?  I can’t believe my sweet cuddly newborn is now a giggly wiggly mess.  That giggly wiggly mess still has the same happy nature of my sweet newborn, though.

Ian’s had a few successful outings in church now, and had his big debut in front of the church this last Sunday.  Not only did Mommy, Grandma, Preston, and Joy drive up for Ian’s baptism, but EVERYONE from the boys’ house at MSR came: Zach, Sam, Kaleb, Lil, Ben, Randall, Bud, Paige, Momma Kim, Coach, and Tabitha.  We took up 3 pews!  Grandma was concerned how Ian would react since so many infants cry when the cool water hits their head, but Ian was pleased to be the center of so many people’s attention.  I don’t think stage fright will ever be a problem for him.

After church, we came home for lunch and Ian held center court for entertainment.  He’s getting so giggly lately, and absolutely chuckles when he hears Mogwai bark.  Look at the difference between Ian and his dog 21 weeks ago and 3 days ago:

And look how big Hobby’s getting!  She’s bigger than her daddy lately.

Ian has gone from fussing about doing tummy time, to flipping from his back to his stomach as often as possible and propping his weight up on his arms.  He’s not quite ready to crawl, and hasn’t started making too much effort to pull with his arms yet.  He’s still content to push with his legs, even though on our hard wood floor he slides so much that he doesn’t go anywhere.  I’m definitely going to have to get some mats that don’t slide for him soon.

The puppies were delighted to have visitors all afternoon.  Here we have an extremely rare photo: Not only did Tabitha get a shot of my grandmother, but she’s actually playing with a dog!

Ian also took full advantage of the crowd.  Here he has his Nana giving him his bottle of expressed milk, even though he’s almost to the point that he doesn’t want us to hold it for him.  See how he already knows to look at the camera?  I can’t decide if this is nature or nurture.  He’s got it coming from both sides of his family, and all his caregivers encouraging him.  Poor kid doesn’t have a chance. (You can also see Aunt Joy checking her phone in the background).

Since Fall brings cooler temps, it always makes me feel like having chilli. Before leaving for church, I put together a big batch of chilli in the crock pot to sit and simmer while we were gone, then we came home and made a big bowl of Rotel cheese dip. For dessert I made the most ridiculously easy lemon bars. I found a recipe for Strawberry Brownies on Pinterest, but didn’t have strawberry cake mix on hand, so I decided to tweak:

Lemon “Brownie” Bars

Ingredients:

1 box of cake mix

2 eggs

1/3 cup of oil

1 cup powdered sugar

1 1/2 Tablespoon Lemon Juice

Directions:

  1. Mix cake mix with oil and eggs and spread into a greased 9 x 13 baking dish.
  2. Bake for 12-14 minutes at 350 degrees.
  3. While mixture is baking, with electric beaters, blend powdered sugar and lemon juice.
  4. When mixture is done baking, remove from oven and spread lemon glaze over it while still hot.
  5. Allow bars to cool to room temperature (glaze will set), then slice into squares and serve!
See!  what could be easier?  I’m thinking of trying these next week with orange cake mix, and substituting orange juice to make the glaze…
